WELCOME — Zach Anderson turned in a stellar pitching performance Friday to lead the Martin County West Mavericks past the Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop Thunderbirds, 4-2, during a non-league baseball game at Fox Lake Sports Complex in Welcome.

Anderson went the seven-inning distance, scattering four hits, walking none and striking out seven. Anderson threw only 71 pitches of which 57 were strikes. At one point Anderson retired 15 batters in a row.

“He had his fastball command today,” said MCW head coach Phil Rotunda. “We had the chance to score a few more runs. I thought we had another run the play at home where Zach was called out. I thought he got his foot in there before the tag.”

The only negative on the day for the Mavericks was the runners left-on-base statistic. The Mavericks stranded 11, including leaving the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth inning.

GFW scored its runs in the top of the first inning.

Thunderbirds’ lead-off hitter Mikal Nordlund singled on the first pitch of the game and the second hitter reached via an error. A ground out scored the first run and a single scored the second.

Anderson escaped further damage as the fifth hitter flew out to left and catcher Cam Meyer threw out a runner attempting to steal for the final out of the inning.

The Mavericks got a run back in the bottom of the first inning. Anderson singled, stole second and third base, and scored on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Jacob Fiala.

MCW tied the game 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning and finally took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth, thanks to three hit batters and Fiala’s run-scoring double.

Anderson escaped trouble in the top of the seventh. GFW had the potential tying runs on base with two outs, but Anderson got the final out when the GFW hitter struck out looking.

Fiala had three hits and Anderson had MCW’s other two hits. MCW hitters walked three times and had three runners reach after hit by a pitch.

The Mavericks improve to 8-5 overall and next play at 11 a.m. today against Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda at Fox Lake Sports Complex in Welcome.
