Segorski, Kositzky, Smale honored for Eskymos athletics | News, Sports, Jobs

ESCANABA — Recently, Escanaba seniors Carsyn Segorski, Joseph Kositzky and Connor Smale were senior athletic award recipients.

Segorski and Kositzky received the Gary Abrahamson Senior Athletic award, while Segorski and Smale were selected as Pfotenhauer/Gessner Scholarship award winners.

The Abrahamson award is given to the boy and girl of the graduating class who achieved the most athletic varsity letters with a minimum of a 3.0 grade point average.

The award is named after former Eskymo Gary Abrahamson Sr., who won the Herman Gessner (now the Pfotenhauer/Gessner) award in 1949 with eight of nine possible varsity letters.

Segorski finished her high school career with 12 letters total (sideline cheer — 3, competitive cheer — 4, softball — 4, tennis — 1).

Kositzky also earned double-digit letters, tallying 10 total (bowling — 4, track — 3, football — 2, golf — 1).

Segorski was also one of the honorees for the Pfotenhauer/Gessner Scholarship Award.

The Pfotenhauer/Gessner, first started in 1924, is given to a male and female senior athlete who have contributed the most to Eskymos athletics.

Segorski was an anchor on the softball team, including the team’s 2019 state championship run in addition to the cheer and tennis teams.

The other Pfotenhauer/Gessner winner was Connor Smale.

Smale earned honorable mention in his senior year on the All-U.P. boys basketball list and a second team selection for the All-GNC awards.

He also helped the Eskymos boys tennis team earn back-to-back U.P. Finals victories in his junior and senior years.

Last year’s winners included Nicole Kamin (selected for both), Bryant Maki who received the Pfotenhauer/Gessner and Brody Bevins who earned the Abrahamson nod.
